The Greatest Gift: A Surro Babe

Getting pregnant with my son Lewis was by all accounts pretty easy. We decided we were ready, I went off birth control, and a few short months later I was shopping for strollers and creating a birth plan. At 24 weeks, everything changed. I was diagnosed with a rare eye condition that put my sight in jeopardy. In an attempt to spare you the details and keep this respectfully short, I will share the end result: my son turned 3 in June and I have my vision! Unfortunately, carrying another child would put my eyesight at risk.

After considering all of our options, we decided the surrogacy route was the best path for us. I often asked myself, “who on earth would be willing to go through IVF, 9 months of pregnancy, a birth, postpartum recovery and pumping for a complete stranger… and during a pandemic, no less!?”

Her name is Nanette. She is the best thing that has ever happened to us and she gave us the greatest gift we have and will ever receive – our son, Casey.

Who are these women that are so selfless to do this for another person? Well, research shows us some commonalities in surrogate carriers:

  • They are mothers themselves, who loved being pregnant and can’t imagine not being able to carry their own child – they are highly empathetic

  • They are hard working, inside and outside of the home – they are pragmatic and family-centered

  • They often volunteer in their communities or at their kids’ schools, give blood, or foster animals – they are natural givers

Above all, they are dynamic women with big hearts who simply want to “bring joy” to another family. Not surprising, right?

If this sounds like you and if surrogacy has ever crossed your mind, I encourage you to start exploring. Talk to your medical professional and research the process and paths to complete a journey. I am also here to help! I now work as a surrogacy educator, helping women understand all of the details around becoming a surrogate.

From the mouth of this Intended Parent: you are so needed.
