Common Childbirth Education Questions

IMG_6641.jpg

Recently we asked our Instagram followers what questions they have about Blooma’s Childbirth Education. And as it goes, if one person has a question, it’s likely others have had that question as well.

Below we’ve compiled these questions and answers. If you have others, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to support and nourish you and your baby. You’ve got this!

Why do I need to take a birth class?
Childbirth education classes have been shown to increase confidence for labor and birth, which is a fantastic outcome! In our childbirth education classes we cover lots of beneficial material, from what each stage of labor will look/sound like, to practice with positions and hands-on comfort measures, to planning for a smooth postpartum. Birth is a big event, and our goal is to help each family walk into this experience feeling educated and empowered!

I’m not sure where I am birth yet. Wondering if I can still take class?
Absolutely! We support families birthing at hospitals, freestanding birth centers, and home. In fact, many of our families change care providers and birth locations throughout the duration of our classes! We hope to help you identify the birth location that most closely meets your own values, goals, and preferences for your birth.

My partner can’t attend one of the classes. Is that ok?
Yes! Just let us know in advance, so we can best support you for position and comfort measure practice on that day. If you have a doula or friend/family member who would like to join you on that day, they’re welcome to step in as your support person as well!

What if I want to have an epidural? Do you go over that in class?
We sure do! We support all types of birth, from unmedicated to medicated to cesarean birth. We spend time talking about risks and benefits of many interventions, including epidurals. In class, we’ll talk through each step of the epidural process so you’re well prepared.

Money is tight. What makes birth classes worth it?
The feedback from our classes tells us that families walk away feeling more educated, confident, and empowered for labor, birth, and postpartum. We know that the birth of your baby is truly transformational, and we want you to be prepared for the emotional and physical process! Blooma is committed to providing access to high-quality childbirth and parenting to all. If these classes would otherwise be inaccessible to you due to financial constraints, please fill out our Sponsorship Application.

I’m planning a medicated birth, do you support that?
Absolutely! Families with a huge range of birth plans take our classes. We spend time discussing both pharmacological and nonpharmacological comfort measures so that you’re prepared both for the birth you’re envisioning, and in case things take a left turn and go differently than you anticipated or planned. Regardless of how you plan to birth, our goal is that you walk away knowing your options and feeling empowered!

Can people living outside of MSP take your courses?
Yes!! We currently have a hybrid schedule where some of our courses are offered in person and others are taking place virtually. Anyone with internet connectivity is able to access our Childbirth Education Classes!
