Benefits of Acupuncture

Support for Nausea, Constipation, Fatigue, Anxiety, and More During Pregnancy
Your body is changing fast during pregnancy, and acupuncture can support you with the side effects of those massive hormonal and physiological shifts. Regular acupuncture can reduce nausea and heartburn, gently aid with constipation, support your energy levels, and ease your anxiety during the first trimester of pregnancy and beyond. We’re trained in supporting pregnant patients, and acupuncture is a safe, effective tool to add to your pregnancy support plan.
Birth Preparation
Around 36-38 weeks is a great time to start weekly acupuncture to support your birth. Research has shown that acupuncture can help support going into labor without induction. The Cochrane Review for acupuncture and acupressure to induce labor states that “acupuncture may promote a more favourable state of the cervix.” Moreover, acupuncture can help you calm anxiety and feel ready for whatever your birth ultimately looks like.
Pain Relief, During Pregnancy or Anytime
Acupuncture can be excellent for low back pain, shoulder and neck tightness/pain, headaches and migraines, and more. Whether your symptoms are pregnancy related or not, we look at the whole picture to address your pain from multiple angles. Treatments include needles, but may also include cupping, Gua Sha (scraping), Tui Na (Chinese medical massage), and electric stimulation.
Postpartum Recovery
Whether you’re experiencing postpartum depression, low milk supply, breast pain, body pain, or simply feel low energy or anxious, acupuncture can be a great way to support yourself during your postpartum recovery–from the first months, through the first years! Acupuncture is also a great way to support c-section scar healing.
Menstrual Health, Including Preparing to Conceive
Period pain is common, but that doesn’t mean it’s normal! Whether you’re planning to try to conceive, or just suffering from irregular periods, period pain, endometriosis, or PCOS, acupuncture and herbal medicine can support a healthier menstrual cycle. If you are preparing to conceive, regulating your cycle is key, and acupuncture can also support healthy ovulation as you’re trying. When possible, we recommend starting acupuncture about 3 months before you plan to start trying to conceive.
Mental and Emotional Health
Whether you’re trying to conceive, pregnant, postpartum, or none of the above, acupuncture is a great tool for supporting your mental and emotional health. We love working with patients to manage anxiety, depression, stress, addiction, and more.

How We’ll Treat You

Acupuncture and herbal medicine can address a wide range of health conditions – from musculoskeletal pain to mental health.

We don’t just treat one symptom, we look at the whole picture. East Asian medicine is built on thousands of years of clinical experience and also incorporates modern anatomy and research.

First, we’ll take time to understand your goals & how we can support you

At your first appointment, we take our time getting to know you and understanding what’s going on in your body, and your world. Our conversation will focus on your goals for treatments, and how we can best support you. We’ll also ask questions that help us understand holistically what is going on in your body from a Chinese medicine perspective.

Next, we’ll provide a treatment tailored specifically to you

Chinese medicine treatments include acupuncture (the insertion of hair-thin needles into specific points on the body), and may also include cupping, gua sha, tui na (Chinese medical massage), herbal medicine, and more.

We’ll always communicate with you about the plan, and ensure you’re comfortable at every step.

We’ll collaborate on a care plan that fits your life & goals

At the end of your first treatment, we’ll talk about our recommendations for care, and how that can fit your life. Acupuncture is cumulative, meaning the treatments build on each other to support you feeling your best. That being said, there’s not one right answer for how often you come in, and we’ll work with you to design a plan that feels feasible and supportive.
